1 | Went from McDowell Nature Preserve to [[Carolina Beach State Park Campground>>https://www.ncparks.gov/state-parks/carolina-beach-state-park]], near Wilmington, NC. The intent is to visit "[[Shark Tooth Island>>https://sharkstoothisland.com/]]", where there are many shark teeth as well as fossils.

3 | Arrived around 5pm and checked in with no problems. Asked about methods to get to "Shark Tooth Island" and was given a pamphlet about Captain Charlie's tours. Called Captain Charlie and asked about going tomorrow. He said that's doable, but he's going to be going to the doctor for all sorts of tests tomorrow, so he referred us to his son, Captain Charles. Talked with Captain Charles and worked out where we should meet him, etc. We then went on a short hike down to the waterfront,

13 | Tomorrow, we walk down this same trail to meet Captain Charles and go on a "3 hour tour" (yeah, we know how that ends!) of Shark Tooth Island!

20 | For our trip to Shark Tooth Island, we used "[[Capt Charlie's Adventures>>https://captcharliesadventures.com/]]".

22 | Apparently, the original "Capt. Charlie" is now in his 60s and his son "Charles" is taking over. Charles was very nice and told us all about the place while we were traveling out to the island on his small boat. The State Park was getting picky about his picking up passengers at the State Park Marina (even though he pays for a slip to store his boat there!), so he picked us up along the Intracoastal Waterway which runs right next to the park. His boat just slides right up onto the sand and you step aboard! We then travelled out to the island, which is only a few miles away.

27 | The island is so small you can easily walk around it in a few minutes! Richard started walking one direction, encountering a tree which was partially obstructing the shore, so he walked the other direction. After maybe 15 minutes, he encountered a tree obstructing the beach. Looking at it, it seemed like the same tree! Sure enough, making his way past the tree, he found himself back on the original side. It's very small!
28 | |||
29 | There were a few kayaks there as well. The boat here is our boat.

35 | Kelly searching for shark teeth and fossils. She found quite a few and Capt Charles found many, giving us most, if not all, of them as well. (He has a lot already!)
36 | |||
37 | |||
38 | At one point, Richard was wondering where Kelly was, so he checked "Find Friends". There she is, a little way around the island!

42 | |||
43 | There are a very few trails into the interior of the island, but there isn't much there:

48 | While we were there, a few very large ships came up the river. Capt Charles had to undock his boat and move it away from the island because the resulting swells would bash his boat against the rocks. At one point the kayaks looked as though they may be threatened, but we never saw any carried away.

55 | After we returned from our trip, we went over to the local Carolina Beach Park and walked along the beach for a mile or so. Capt Charles had indicated that it was an interesting beach to visit and he had found some shark teeth there, but we only found a few interesting shells, which Kelly picked up, We had to make our way back to the campground before 9pm, because that's when they close the gate and if you're not inside when it closed, you can't get back in!

59 | So ends an interesting day of shells and beaches.
