We actually got out of the campground fairly early (for us) at 9am. We had about 6-7 hours of driving ahead of us and wanted to get to the McDowell campground while it was still light and hopefully early enough to get a spot (first come, first serve). However, we also wanted these "Alien Socks" from Roswell! 26 - 27 -We drove through beautiful mountain passes still covered in snow with horses grazing: 28 - 29 -[[image:image-20240402212006-1.jpeg]] 30 - 31 - 32 -We saw warnings of elk, but didn't see any: 33 - 34 -[[image:image-20240402212110-2.jpeg]] 35 - 36 - 37 -We made it into Roswell, where we saw signs of aliens: 38 - 39 -[[image:image-20240402212208-3.jpeg]] 40 - 41 -But try as we may, we [[never found>>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQeezCdF4mk]] any Alien Socks. 42 - 43 - 44 -So, we travelled on 45 - 46 -[[image:image-20240402212319-4.jpeg]] 47 - 48 - 49 -Over perfectly straight roads for 100s of miles: 50 - 51 -[[image:image-20240402212531-5.jpeg]] 52 - 53 - 54 -And the only indication we were entering Texas was the change of timezones: 55 - 56 -[[image:image-20240402212625-6.jpeg]] 57 - 58 - 59 -Finally landing at McDowell Campground! We were worried about possibly not getting one of the small number of spots, but what we were **not** prepared for was the place being absolutely entirely **empty!** We drove through all 10 sites which have full hookups and selected the one we wanted because absolutely no one is here! 60 - 61 -[[image:image-20240402212947-7.jpeg]] 62 - 63 - 64 -So... Here's the new plan: 65 - 66 -We can actually put off the decision of whether to go farther north or back down toward Dallas by one more day! (And, when you don't actually **need** to make a decision, you shouldn't! Always put off decisions as long as possible because it gives the opportunity for more information to come in, which leads to a better decision. I give you this life lesson for free!) 67 - 68 - 69 -Poplar Bluff currently is projected to have close to 0% cloud cover while the rest of Texas under the eclipse line has lots of clouds: 70 - 71 -[[image:image-20240402220039-9.png]] 72 - 73 - 74 -Given where we are, the trip to Poplar Bluff would be over 700 miles, so it would take another two days 75 - 76 -[[image:image-20240402215703-8.png]] 77 - 78 - 79 -If we split that in the middle, we end up around Fort Smith (or actually Van Buren, which is closer to the freeway). So, given we're there tomorrow, we could go either way: 80 - 81 -[[image:image-20240402220312-10.png]] 82 - 83 - 84 -[[image:image-20240402220331-11.png]] 85 - 86 - 87 -We're really thinking seriously about Poplar Bluff. It looks as if east of Dallas will be under clouds. 88 - 89 - 90 -Onward to [[Springhill Campground>>doc:Main.Springhill-Park.WebHome]]. 91 - 92 92
